A heart-pounding video from the East Coast is leaving millions feeling grateful. A heroic NYPD officer saved a choking baby on the side of the highway. Now, the police officer has been identified as Det. First Grade Michael Greaney.
On Wednesday, around 8,45 am, Det. First Grade Michael Greaney, working at the office of Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, stopped a black BMW speeding along the emergency shoulder lane at Bronx River Parkway.
The officer, who was driving an unmarked car, flickered his light and pulled the car over to see what the problem was. And what looked like a routine stop became a life-saving operation. It was all captured on video.
Police said Greaney approached the car, and in it was a father who was panicking. “My baby’s choking,” the man said, per the NY Post. Greaney reached into the car and picked up the little girl, wearing a pink onesie.

He repeatedly banged on her back, holding her on the side of the road. After a few taps, the toddler’s throat was cleared and started breathing again, authorities said.
Police stated that a medical professional spotted the incident and checked on the baby to confirm she was OK. Later, police confirmed that the baby girl was doing well and didn’t need further medical attention.
Michael Greaney, a 17-year department veteran who joined the NYPD in July of 2008, is now praised as a hero for saving the child’s life. A video of the event was posted on TikTok.
“Detective Greaney’s split-second decision and calm under pressure truly embodies The Greatest Detectives in the World,” Detectives’ Endowment Association President Scott Munro said per NY Post. “His quick action didn’t just save a life — it reminded all of us what heroism looks like on the streets of this city.”
