Today, around 11 a.m., Clara returned home after a four-month business trip. She didn’t call

Clara froze, her mind racing with possibilities that she didn’t want to consider. She focused on the small detail that had caught her eye—a scarf draped over the edge of the bed. It was a bright red, a color she never wore, and she knew instantly it didn’t belong to her.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she stood in the doorframe. She wanted to turn and leave, but her feet wouldn’t move. Instead, she took a cautious step forward, her eyes scanning the room for more clues.

As she approached the bed, the figures stirred. Her husband, Mark, opened his eyes and sat up, confusion and surprise etched on his face when he saw her. Next to him, a woman, who Clara had never seen before, sat up too, her eyes wide with shock.

“Clara?” Mark stammered, his voice thick with sleep and disbelief. “What are you doing here?”

Clara swallowed hard, her voice caught in her throat. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “I came home early. I wanted to surprise you and Alex,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

The woman beside Mark pulled the sheets up to her chin, embarrassment and guilt flashing across her face. Clara’s mind was a whirl of emotions—hurt, betrayal, confusion. She had never imagined coming home to this.

“Who is she, Mark?” Clara asked, her voice trembling despite her efforts to stay calm.

Mark glanced at the woman, then back at Clara. “This is Lisa,” he said quietly. “She’s… she’s a friend.”

Clara felt a sharp pain in her chest. A friend wouldn’t be in their bed. She knew that much. “A friend?” she repeated, her voice rising with disbelief.

Lisa looked down, avoiding Clara’s eyes. The silence that followed was suffocating. Clara could feel the weight of the truth pressing down on her, threatening to crush her.

“Clara, I can explain,” Mark began, but Clara shook her head, holding up a hand to stop him.

“I don’t think I want to hear it right now,” she managed to say, her voice breaking. “I just… needed to know.”

She turned on her heel and walked out, her mind numb. She felt like she was moving through a fog, each step heavier than the last. She found herself back in the kitchen, standing by the bags she had placed on the table earlier. The sight of them was a harsh reminder of what she had hoped to find when she came home—a family reunion, not a scene from a nightmare.

Clara took a deep breath, trying to hold back the tears. She needed to think, to figure out what to do next. But right now, all she wanted was to get away, to escape the situation and the house that no longer felt like home.

Gathering her strength, Clara left the apartment, closing the door softly behind her. She needed space to process everything, to understand how her life had changed in an instant.

As she descended the stairs, she knew this was just the beginning. There were questions that needed answers and decisions that had to be made. But that would come later.

For now, Clara was determined to find clarity amidst the chaos.
