If You See A Plastic Bottle On Your Tire, Pay Close Attention

Amid the pressures of modern life—rising costs, long work hours, and daily stress—staying aware of personal safety is more important than ever. One emerging concern involves a surprisingly simple but effective car-theft tactic now appearing in multiple countries.

The method, first widely reported in Limpopo, South Africa, has since been spotted in the United States and other regions. It involves placing an empty plastic water bottle on one of a vehicle’s wheels as a discreet marker for thieves.

The bottle is usually positioned on the front passenger-side tire, making it difficult for drivers to notice before entering the car. When the vehicle begins to move, the bottle emits a loud crackling or popping noise, grabbing the driver’s attention.

The goal is to get the driver to pull over and step out to investigate the sound. In that moment of distraction, thieves act quickly. They may jump into the still-running vehicle and drive away, or they may seize valuables left inside, such as purses, phones, or wallets.

Because the tactic relies on surprise, awareness is the strongest defense. Experts recommend taking a brief walk around the car before getting in, especially if you are in an unfamiliar or poorly lit area. A quick visual inspection of the wheels can reveal whether something has been wedged between the tire and the body of the vehicle.

If a bottle is discovered, drivers should avoid removing it or confronting anyone nearby. Instead, stepping away from the vehicle and calling 911 is the safest option. Giving dispatchers your exact location and a description of your car helps ensure a swift response.

Sharing this knowledge can help others stay alert and avoid falling victim to this tactic. Remaining vigilant, even during routine tasks, can significantly reduce the risk of theft and protect both personal safety and property.
