Milwaukee woman accused of shooting husband; ‘Because I’m just tired’

A woman from Milwaukee has been formally charged in relation to a deadly shooting that occurred on the north side of the city on May 31.

Court documents indicate that 61-year-old Doris Winters faces one count of first-degree reckless homicide, involving the use of a dangerous weapon.

Shooting at 95th and Brown Deer

Background

As per the criminal complaint, Milwaukee police were dispatched to a shooting incident at an apartment complex located near 95th and Brown Deer shortly after 10 p.m.

Upon their arrival, bystanders outside the apartment directed the police towards a woman who was leaving the scene. The bystanders identified her as the shooter.

According to the complaint, officers observed the woman discard a handgun. They apprehended her, took her into custody, and secured the firearm she had dropped. Authorities confirmed the woman’s identity as Doris Winters.

The victim, 49-year-old Aerion Winters, succumbed to his injuries at the scene despite attempts to save his life. Court documents revealed that Aerion Winters sustained gunshot wounds to his back and chest.

The complaint states that a witness informed investigators that the victim was the spouse of Doris Winters. The witness mentioned that the victim had recently been residing at a different location.

On the night of the shooting, the witness stated that he transported the victim to Doris Winters’ apartment so that the victim could collect some of his belongings. Once inside the apartment, an argument ensued between Doris Winters and the victim, as detailed in the complaint.

The witness informed investigators that he positioned himself between the individuals involved in an attempt to de-escalate the conflict. During the dispute, the witness asserts that Doris Winters retrieved a handgun from a nearby table in the living room, racked the slide, and remarked that it was loaded.

The witness asserts that he observed Doris Winters discharge her firearm into the victim’s back.

The witness conveyed to investigators that the victim fell to the ground. Allegedly, Doris Winters instructed the witness to “get him out of here before I shoot him again,” as stated in court documents.

The witness called for assistance from a friend who had been waiting outside, and together they transported the victim.
