Newsom Tears Up While Blaming Trump For L.A. Riots Over ICE Operations

The Department of Homeland Security is set to deploy ICE tactical units to five cities governed by Democrats in response to the ongoing unrest in Los Angeles, where Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom appeared visibly distressed as he attributed part of the crisis to President Donald Trump.

As reported by MSNBC, these specialized units will be dispatched to New York City, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, and northern Virginia. Four of these cities are firmly Democratic, while northern Virginia encompasses the Democratic stronghold of Alexandria.

The ICE operations have sparked widespread protests, causing Los Angeles to come to a halt and leading the mayor to enforce a citywide curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. However, these actions are part of Trump’s promised crackdown on the presence of undocumented migrants in the U.S. following four years of ‘open borders’ policies under former President Joe Biden.

These reports emerged as the California governor issued a grim forecast for the rest of the nation during a nationally televised address on Tuesday night, condemning Trump’s deployment of U.S. troops to Los Angeles to safeguard federal property and agents – rather than to perform civilian immigration and law enforcement duties, which would contravene U.S. law.

“Listen, this situation extends beyond the protests occurring in Los Angeles, particularly when Donald Trump attempted to gain sweeping authority to take control of the National Guard. He issued that directive to encompass every state across the nation,” Newsom stated.

“This matter concerns all of us. It concerns you. While California may be the first to face this issue, it is evident that it will not conclude here. Other states will follow. Democracy is at stake. Democracy is currently under threat before our very eyes; the moment we have dreaded has finally come,” he asserted, despite the fact that Trump’s power as commander-in-chief over all armed forces, which includes state National Guard units, is explicitly outlined in the Constitution.

In light of this, a federal appeals court for the 9th Circuit temporarily suspended a lower court’s decision on Thursday that mandated the return of authority over the California National Guard to Newsom. Both parties are required to submit their arguments by early next week.

During his address, Newsom also charged Trump with “destroying the foundational project of our founding fathers” which established three equal branches of government.

As Newsom presented his heartfelt speech, Trump was at Fort Bragg engaging with U.S. military personnel.

While in North Carolina to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, Trump dedicated a significant portion of his speech to justify the decision to send troops in response to the protests occurring in Los Angeles, labeling the demonstrators who opposed ICE arrests as “animals” and “foreign enemies.”

“What you are witnessing in California is a comprehensive attack on peace, public order, and national sovereignty… aimed at perpetuating a foreign invasion of our nation. We will not permit that to occur,” Trump stated to the troops. “We will not allow an American city to be overrun and conquered by a foreign adversary. That is precisely what they are.”

The president further characterized Los Angeles as “a garbage dump,” asserting that “entire neighborhoods are dominated” by criminals. He pledged that the federal government would “utilize every resource at our disposal to suppress the violence and restore law and order.”

“We will free Los Angeles and ensure it is once again safe, clean, and liberated,” he concluded.

Newsom attributed the persistent crisis in Los Angeles to the federal government and issued a grave warning that similar disturbances could soon extend to other states.

“Authoritarian regimes typically start by targeting those who are least capable of defending themselves, but their actions do not end there,” he stated.

“This is a president who, in just over 140 days, has dismissed government watchdogs that could hold him responsible for corruption and fraud. He has declared a war—a war on culture, on history, on science, and on knowledge itself. Databases, quite literally, are disappearing,” he further asserted, although members of his own party have accused the far-left factions of ‘warring’ against the very same elements.
