The Mom Who Stabbed Her Baby To Death Is Found Dead In Prison

Rachel Tunstill, 32, was found dead in HMP Styal, Cheshire, where she was serving a life sentence for murdering her newborn daughter, Mia Kelly. Her death is currently under investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman. Tunstill’s case had attracted widespread attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the legal complexities that unfolded over several years.

The crime occurred in 2017 when Tunstill, a psychology graduate and deputy manager, gave birth in secret and then fatally stabbed her newborn daughter using scissors. She then disposed of the infant’s body in a bin within her flat. Initially convicted of murder, her case saw multiple appeals. At one point, the charge was reduced to infanticide due to her mental health, but she was later retried and reconvicted of murder.

Throughout the court proceedings, Tunstill’s mental health was a major focus. She had autism and reportedly believed she was experiencing a miscarriage, not a full-term birth. Her defense argued that this misunderstanding, along with her mental health struggles, played a crucial role in her actions. The court examined her psychological state extensively during both trials.

Disturbing evidence also emerged regarding Tunstill’s internet activity. She had researched infamous killers and cases of child murder, suggesting a fixation on violent crimes. This information contributed to public and judicial perception of her as deeply troubled and potentially dangerous.

Her death in custody has renewed conversations about the need for mental health support in the justice system. It underscores society’s responsibility to provide better care for vulnerable individuals, especially those with complex mental health needs.
