Tragedy at School: 9 Dead, Including 7 Students, in Devastating Shooting

Austria is mourning a heartbreaking loss after a mass shooting at a school in the city of Graz left nine people dead, including seven students, on the morning of Tuesday, June 10.

The horrific event unfolded at BORG Dreischützengasse, a well-known high school in central Graz. Police responded swiftly to emergency calls around 10:00 a.m. local time, according to national broadcaster ORF.

According to official reports from the Austria Presse Agentur (APA) and statements made by Graz Mayor Elke Kahr, the victims include:

  • 7 students
  • 1 adult
  • The suspected shooter, who is believed to have taken his own life

Police confirmed the location of the incident via their official X (formerly Twitter) account and issued an immediate lockdown.

“Several people have died,” the police statement read.
“Crisis intervention teams are on-site to support students and parents.”

 Crisis Response & Family Support

In an effort to support devastated families, police designated ASKÖ Stadium in Graz as an official meeting point for parents. Emergency medical teams, psychologists, and grief counselors were deployed to assist those affected.

Authorities also assured the public that the school has been secured and there is currently no ongoing threat to public safety.

Helicopters Deployed, School Locked Down

As part of a major police operation, multiple Interior Ministry helicopters and tactical units were dispatched to the scene.
Reports from Die Presse indicate that the suspected shooter may have been a former student at the school, although this has not yet been confirmed by law enforcement.

During a press conference covered by the BBC, local police confirmed “multiple casualties” but did not immediately disclose exact numbers, pending notification of families.

 Official Statement from Police

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims. The investigation is ongoing, and we will release more information as soon as it becomes available.”

 A Nation in Shock

This incident has sent shockwaves throughout Austria — a country not frequently associated with gun violence. Community leaders, educators, and politicians across Europe have expressed condolences and called for national reflection.

In Remembrance

As Austria begins to grieve, candlelight vigils and memorials are already being organized in Graz. The loss of so many young lives — students who should have been looking toward summer break — has struck a deep emotional chord.
