A doctor in northern Vietnam was left astonished after delivering a newborn who arrived holding an unexpected object in his tiny hand. The birth took place at Hai Phong International Hospital, where a woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy despite having an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted two years earlier as contraception. The surprising moment was captured in a photo by the attending obstetrician, Dr. Tran Viet Phuong, and quickly went viral online.
According to the doctor, he noticed the newborn clutching the device immediately after delivery and decided to photograph the unusual scene. The mother, who already had two children, had relied on the IUD to prevent further pregnancies. However, it is believed that the device may have shifted from its proper position, allowing the pregnancy to occur despite its intended purpose.
The baby, weighing around 3.2 kilograms, was born completely healthy and without complications. The image of the newborn holding the IUD sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many expressing amazement and humor, while others felt relieved that the device had not caused harm during the pregnancy. The story quickly gained attention as an example of how unpredictable such situations can be.
Although rare, this is not the first time a contraceptive device has failed in such a memorable way. A similar case in the United States once went viral, though it was later revealed to have been staged. The incident serves as a reminder that while IUDs are highly effective forms of birth control, no method is entirely foolproof, and unexpected outcomes can still occur.
