California Man Taken In by the FBI in Connection with Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance — Latest Updates

As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, authorities say a recent arrest linked to the case is not directly tied to her disappearance — even as public speculation intensifies.

The development began after a series of alarming messages were reportedly sent to members of the Guthrie family during the height of concern over Nancy’s whereabouts. Federal officials confirmed on February 5, 2026, that a California man was taken into custody in connection with those communications.

Nancy is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, longtime co-host of Today, and her family has been publicly pleading for information.

Federal Charges Announced

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the suspect allegedly sent threatening communications across state lines. The FBI coordinated with local law enforcement after determining the messages warranted federal review.

Officials emphasized that the texts were not connected to any verified ransom demand, nor do investigators believe the suspect was involved in Nancy’s disappearance itself.

Prosecutors filed a federal criminal complaint charging the man with transmitting a demand for ransom in interstate commerce and using a telecommunications device anonymously with intent to threaten or harass. Authorities stressed that a criminal complaint does not imply guilt and that the suspect is presumed innocent.

The man was identified as Derrick Callella. Investigators allege he admitted to sending the messages after following media coverage and gathering family information online.

Federal officials stated that attempts to exploit high-profile tragedies for personal gain will be aggressively prosecuted.

Prior Legal Issues Surface

As federal filings became public, court records revealed Callella was already facing charges in a separate case in California.

Public records show he had been charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in a broader unemployment fraud case involving county employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prosecutors alleged that 13 employees collectively obtained more than $400,000 in fraudulent unemployment benefits. According to court filings, Callella was accused of receiving nearly $10,000 by falsely claiming reduced earnings while continuing to receive a county paycheck.

That case remains active. Reports indicate Callella appeared in state court for a preliminary hearing the same week federal allegations surfaced.

His attorney in the state matter reportedly declined to comment and indicated she had not yet been contacted by federal authorities.

Meanwhile, investigators in Arizona have continued addressing public questions surrounding Nancy’s disappearance.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department offered a technical explanation for why no doorbell footage was available from the early hours of her disappearance.

Sheriff Chris Nanos said the camera disconnected around 1:47 a.m., and although motion-detection software later registered activity, no footage was saved because the system reportedly lacked an active subscription. Without cloud storage, the device overwrote earlier data.

Authorities have urged the public to separate confirmed findings from speculation as forensic analysis continues.

Savannah and her siblings — Annie and Camron — posted an emotional video message asking for help and verification regarding any claims about their mother’s status.

“We feel the prayers,” Savannah said, thanking supporters. She described Nancy as loving, generous, and devoted to her grandchildren.

Savannah also emphasized that her mother is in fragile health and relies on medication she does not currently have access to.

In the closing moments of the message, Savannah addressed her mother directly, calling her “a strong woman” and expressing hope that she could hear the family’s plea.

The video caption included a simple request: “Bring her home.”

Alleged Ransom Reports

Amid the search, TMZ reported receiving what it described as an alleged ransom message tied to Nancy’s disappearance. The outlet said the message demanded a payment in the millions via Bitcoin and referenced details about her Tucson-area home

Law enforcement acknowledged awareness of reports involving possible ransom communications but emphasized that investigators are reviewing evidence carefully and coordinating with federal partners before drawing conclusions.

Savannah addressed the issue directly in the family’s video, saying:

“We live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know, without a doubt, that she is alive and that you have her.”

The family stressed the need for verification before taking further steps.

Claims Involving a Family Member Denied

Another report suggested that a family member may have been under scrutiny, referencing Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni. However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department publicly denied that any family member had been named a suspect or person of interest.

Officials clarified:

“We have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case. Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie.”

Authorities also denied reports that a vehicle connected to Cioni had been seized.

Ongoing Investigation

At this stage, investigators say the federal arrest related to threatening messages is separate from the disappearance itself. Officials continue to review digital evidence, forensic results, and incoming tips.

As the case unfolds, authorities have repeatedly urged caution regarding online speculation and unverified claims.

For now, the search for Nancy Guthrie remains active — and her family’s message remains simple and urgent: bring her home.
