In a case that has sent ripples of indignation through the local community, a missing pet’s disappearance turned into a nightmare of “unbelievable” cruelty before ending in a miraculous rescue. On April 15, the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) revealed the harrowing details regarding Leo, a small dog found bound with duct tape and discarded in a dumpster like common refuse.
The intervention came just moments before a potential tragedy. According to NHS reports, a local resident contacted Animal Control after hearing rustling inside a dumpster. Initially suspecting a trapped raccoon, the caller was horrified to discover a dog incapacitated by layers of adhesive.
“The Most Disgusting Thing I’ve Ever Seen”
Responding officer Kevin Wiederin, a veteran of animal welfare, described a scene of systematic abuse. Leo’s entire head was encased in duct tape, covering his muzzle and eyes. His front and back legs were taped together, his tail was bound, and his fur was matted with “food and other debris.”
“I have never seen anything like it,” Wiederin told KETV. “I was absolutely sickened. It was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t imagine doing that to another living being, let alone a helpless little dog and then just throwing it away like trash.”
The timing of the discovery was nothing short of providential. Within thirty minutes of the rescue, a sanitation truck arrived to empty the dumpster. Had the witness not looked inside, Leo would have almost certainly perished in the compacting machinery.

A Microchip Leads to an Emotional Reunion
Once at the Nebraska Humane Society, medical staff sedated the pup to begin the painstaking process of removing the tape. Because the adhesive was so tightly bound, veterinarians had to shave much of his fur to clear the debris. Despite the trauma, the organization reported that Leo remained “in good spirits” and was soon wagging his tail.
The breakthrough in the case came when staff scanned the dog and located a microchip. The records identified him as Leo, belonging to Erin Dillon-Pasillas. Dillon-Pasillas had been frantically searching for her pet after he slipped out of the house while she was taking her son to school a few days prior.
“Every day got more stressful… it was just crickets,” she told KETV, describing the agonizing days spent calling shelters. Upon receiving the call, she was overcome with relief and grief. “I was shaking, calling them… thinking, please be my dog. He’s the sweetest dog! I don’t know why anyone would do this.”
The Search for Justice
While Leo is now recovering at home—awaiting a warm bath and a comprehensive veterinary follow-up—the investigation into his abuser remains stalled. The Nebraska Humane Society noted that there are no surveillance cameras in the immediate vicinity of the dumpster where he was found.

In an effort to generate leads, Animal Services is offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to the identification and arrest of the individual responsible for this act of animal cruelty.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Animal Services at 402-444-7800. As Leo begins his journey toward healing, the community remains on high alert, hoping the perpetrator of this “heartbreaking” crime will be held accountable.
