Heart surgeon warns people should remove this one thing from their life after turning 40

Dr. Jeremy London, a heart surgeon, has shared new insights on healthy living, focusing on habits people—especially those over 40—should reconsider. In a recent TikTok video filmed with his sons, one of them asks, “Dad, what things would you avoid after the age of 40?” Dr. London explains that his top two recommendations apply to any age, beginning with alcohol.

He notes that limiting or removing alcohol is one of the best long-term choices someone can make, emphasizing that it is “toxic to every cell in the body.” While he acknowledges how common alcohol is in social settings, he stresses that people should be thoughtful about how much they consume.

Medical experts support his warning. The Cleveland Clinic highlights the many risks associated with drinking, from weight gain to increased chances of heart disease, liver cirrhosis, certain cancers, and even brain damage. A major study published in The Lancet found that the safest level of alcohol consumption is none at all, suggesting even moderate drinking can have negative effects.

While an occasional drink may not pose serious harm, most health professionals agree that cutting back in midlife—or avoiding alcohol altogether—is a wise choice for long-term well-being.

Dr. London also cautions against smoking and vaping. He explains that both significantly increase the risk of lung cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. His message is simple and firm: “Don’t vape, don’t smoke.”

Another point he emphasizes is the importance of getting enough sleep. He admits it’s something he struggles with personally but stresses that proper rest becomes even more crucial as people age, supporting recovery and overall health.

Finally, Dr. London advises avoiding toxic people and nurturing meaningful relationships. Strong, supportive connections, he says, matter more than anything else in the long run and contribute greatly to a healthier, happier life.
