Online user finds creepy object hanging from ceiling

A viral Reddit post showing something dangling from a ceiling sent the internet into a frenzy, with thousands of users laughing, recoiling, and wildly speculating about a mysterious object that seemed to “wiggle and move.”

On April 15, a Reddit user posting under the handle Takuraiii_ shared a photo in the subreddit “What is it?”, hoping someone could help identify a dark, hairless, string-like object protruding from a narrow gap in a ceiling panel.

The caption wasn’t dramatic — but it was eerie in its simplicity:
“Noticed this sticking out from my ceiling – what is it?”

Within hours, the post exploded, collecting over 35,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments. Pest enthusiasts, comedians, and horrified onlookers poured in to solve the mystery — or at least make jokes about it.

The Ceiling Invader
The thread quickly took on a life of its own, as most Reddit mysteries do.

When OP added the unsettling detail — “It moves so it’s probably not dead” — commenters zeroed in on every feature: the color, the taper, the odd hairless look.

One user chimed in theatrically:

“Rat expert here (no official degree, but I’ve seen An American Tail at least six times). This could be a tail, yes… but it could also be a decoy. Call in backup. Infrared. Night vision. We’re dealing with a professional.”

Another referenced a certain animated chef:

“Sir… that’s a rat’s tail. Not the Ratatouille cute Remy rat. That’s a NYC kind of rat that will fight you over dinner.”

The suggestions escalated in ridiculousness:

“Lick it. If it looks like a rat, tastes like a rat…”

Someone replied immediately:

“Don’t lick the tail. Poke it with a stick and lick the stick instead.”

But not everyone was convinced it was a rat. Other guesses included:

a possum

an armadillo

a giant lizard

“a shadow, nothing to be alarmed about”

And then came the eternal Reddit solution:

“Just push it back up and forget it exists.”

Another user took it further:

“Have you tried tickling it? Maybe it’ll retreat back home.”

A surprising number of commenters insisted:

“You HAVE to pull it.”

OP firmly refused:

“It’s got little hairs sticking out of it. No way I’m touching it with my bare hands.”

‘Burn the House Down’
A chunk of Reddit went straight for the nuclear option.

“I would simply burn the house down.”

Others warned that if it belonged to something dead wedged in the ceiling, the smell would eventually make itself known.

But before OP could decide whether to run, pull, poke, or ignite… the situation escalated.

He updated the thread:

“It started to wiggle and move. It’s gone now.”

That sentence alone gave half the commenters goosebumps.

Someone summed up the collective reaction:

“OP, are you NOT freaking out?! I have the heebie jeebies for you.”

Another warned:

“It’s not gone. It’s just out of sight.”

Mystery Solved
Less than 24 hours later, OP returned with the answer.

It wasn’t a lizard tail.
It wasn’t an opossum.
It wasn’t a mystery creature, a pipe, a cable, or (one user suggested) “a tampon pull string.”

It was exactly what many suspected:

A rat’s tail.

OP confirmed:

“After a heck-ton of comments saying that it’s a rat’s tail, I can now confirm it. I’ll be calling an exterminator soon… Someone said, ‘When there is one, there is a hundred you can’t see.’ God, I hope not.”

Unfortunately for OP, PBS Nature agrees. Rats are social animals and usually live in groups — meaning one tail may not be the only surprise lurking above the ceiling.

Unwanted Roommates
While Reddit found endless humor in the saga, the situation shines a light on a very real issue: rodent infestations hidden inside homes.

Rats and mice commonly live in:

…often unnoticed until they leave behind clues — droppings, noises, chewed materials, or in this case, a tail cameo.

The CDC warns that rodents can transmit several diseases, including hantavirus, the rare but deadly illness that claimed the life of Betsy Arakawa, wife of actor Gene Hackman, in 2025.

How to Recognize an Infestation
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, you may never actually see a rodent unless the infestation is advanced. But there are signs:

droppings

nesting materials

chewed food packaging

holes in walls or floors

stale, musky odors

If you notice any of these, experts recommend calling a professional exterminator before things get out of hand.

One Tail, A Thousand Reactions
What started as a simple Reddit question spiraled into one of the internet’s weirdest viral mysteries of the week.

In the end, it was just a rat — but the jokes, the horror, and the collective imagination of Reddit turned a dark sliver of tail into a full-blown saga.

A good reminder that sometimes… it pays to glance up at your ceiling. Because you never know what might be hanging down to say hello.
