Friends who once debated music and movies now traded encrypted messages about raids, deadlines, and “what if” scenarios. Children overheard enough to understand that their parents were scared, but not enough to grasp why a country that pledged liberty seemed eager to measure their worth in paperwork and expiration dates.

Yet beneath the fear, something stubborn refused to die. Community centers filled with volunteers translating legal updates line by line. Churches, mosques, and temples opened basements for know-your-rights trainings and late-night strategy meetings. People who had spent years trying not to draw attention to themselves began telling their stories out loud, on camera, under their real names. If the system insisted on treating them as temporary, they would answer with the one thing bureaucracy cannot process: a collective decision to stay visible, to stay loud, and to insist that belonging is not a favor granted, but a fact already lived.
