The harrowing details surrounding the abduction and murder of seven-year-old Athena Strand by a FedEx driver have been revealed during court proceedings, painting a chilling picture of an innocent life cut short during a routine delivery. Tanner Horner, 34, entered a guilty plea to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping on April 7, immediately before his trial was scheduled to commence. Horner had been delivering a package containing a Barbie doll—destined to be Athena’s Christmas gift—when he struck the young girl with his delivery van outside her father’s home in Paradise, Texas, on November 30, 2022.
While Horner later claimed to investigators that he had panicked after accidentally hitting the child and forced her into his vehicle to avoid reporting the accident to her father, prosecutors offered a much more sinister account of the events. Wise County District Attorney James Stainton presented evidence to the jury, stating that Athena was conscious and uninjured when she was placed into the van. According to the prosecution, the first words Horner spoke to the young girl were a threat for her to remain silent.
Court testimony highlighted the stark contrast between Horner’s narrative of a panicked accident and the evidence recovered by investigators. Surveillance footage showed Horner driving with eerie composure, even whistling, shortly after the abduction, while Athena was observed to be in clear distress inside the vehicle. Prosecutors argue that Horner’s behavior in the aftermath contradicts his claims of being in a state of chaotic panic.
According to the arrest warrant, Horner proceeded to strangle the seven-year-old to death before disposing of her body near the Trinity River, approximately 10 miles from the site of the abduction. District Attorney Stainton, who has served in his role for over two decades, warned jurors of the visceral nature of the evidence, noting that while efforts were made to conceal the incident from camera lenses, the audio recordings captured the brutal reality of what transpired. Stainton emphasized the disparity between the perpetrator and the victim, telling the jury they were about to hear what a 250-pound man could do to a 67-pound child. Horner, having confessed to these crimes, now faces the potential imposition of the death penalty.
