Two members of Congress entered the House Speaker’s office unexpectedly this week, voicing concerns about recent third-party access to a sensitive Treasury Department payment system.
The incident occurred shortly after a senior Treasury official arrived at the office to discuss ongoing fiscal policy initiatives. According to one of the lawmakers, the official was not present during the confrontation.
“I followed my colleague in, and she was already addressing concerns about the unauthorized use of American citizens’ private tax information,” one lawmaker said to reporters. “Information like this should never be accessible to outside entities without proper oversight.”
Over the weekend, a Treasury representative had reportedly granted “read-only” access to the system to a group focused on government efficiency. The payment system manages significant federal disbursements, including tax refunds and Social Security payments.
In a briefing on Tuesday, Treasury officials clarified that the access granted was limited and did not interfere with or delay any federal transactions.
An individual present during the exchange described the lawmakers’ actions as unexpectedly confrontational but confirmed that the Speaker listened to their concerns.
