Wheel of Fortune Fans Furious After Player Is ‘Robbed’ of a $62,000 Puzzle

A tense Bonus Round finish on Wheel of Fortune has triggered viewer outrage after a participant barely missed winning tens of thousands of dollars because of a highly scrutinized, last-second decision.

The drama happened during a December broadcast starring Amanda Brown, a dancer hailing from San Diego. She competed against two other players in an intense, momentum-shifting episode, quickly establishing herself as a formidable force by solving crucial puzzles and steadily accumulating her bankroll.

Her success during the Prize Puzzle segment was particularly profitable. Taking a chance on the Express Train—a high-risk, high-reward feature that can either multiply or erase earnings—Brown managed to solve the board, securing a massive cash injection along with a holiday package. By the conclusion of the regular rounds, she had amassed more than $22,000 and advanced to the Bonus Round.

Cheered on by her relatives, Brown picked “Food & Drink” as her final category. Following the program’s rules, she received the default letters and then added a few more consonants and a vowel. The half-completed puzzle showed “MAPLE TA_ _ _”, with only a handful of blank spaces left.

As the timer wound down, Brown fired off quick guesses, attempting to nail the right phrase before the clock ran out. At the very last second, she uttered “Maple Taffy”—the correct answer—but the buzzer rang out almost at the exact same time.

That is when the situation took a controversial turn.

Presenter Ryan Seacrest halted the game to confer with the adjudicators. Following a quick assessment, the official verdict was announced: her response was delivered too late. Brown was denied the $40,000 hidden in the prize envelope, stopping her from walking away with what would have been a massive $62,000 grand total.

Immediately, spectators flooded social media to express their anger. A large number of fans argued that Brown had initiated her correct guess prior to the buzzer sounding, claiming the call was far too tight to make without a thorough, detailed review.

Several viewers proposed that the production should have cut to a commercial break to properly examine the audio timing, while others asserted the verdict violated the show’s established guidelines regarding valid answers. The incident rapidly transformed into a viral debate, with audiences arguing over whether the player had been unjustly robbed of her cash.

Even with the heartbreaking finish, Brown still took home a substantial sum of money and the thrill of reaching the ultimate stage of the game. Nevertheless, for a multitude of viewers, the nagging question persists: was that final judgment actually accurate?

As the discussions rage on, this event acts as a stark reminder of how much depends on a mere fraction of a second on major television game shows—where precision, timing, and a sprinkle of luck dictate the ultimate outcome.
